Contains over 3,000 biographies of New Zealanders who have 'made their mark' on this country. It does not include people who are alive.

Early New Zealand Books
This website aims to provide the keyword-searchable text of significant books published about New Zealand in the nineteenth century.  Illustrations and maps in the books have also been digitised, with a higher resolution version available by clicking on the image in the text.  

Accounts of early travellers have been a prime source of information about traditional Maori society and culture. There is also great interest in accounts of the earliest British settlements. The ability to search this body of literature for words and names will be of benefit to both scholars and genealogists.

Find NZ Articles
FindNZarticles provides access to New Zealand content, including material by or about New Zealanders, from a range of New Zealand newspapers and journals. It searches across a number of New Zealand newspaper and journal indexes, including:

  • Southern regional news index created by Dunedin Public Library
  • Regional news index created by Christchurch City Libraries
  • Index New Zealand (INNZ) created by the National Library. Contains descriptions of over half a million articles published in New Zealand over the past 20 years. Approximately one third of the entries contain links to the fulltext of the article.  The titles indexed range from popular magazines such as North and South and Consumer to more specialised journals such as New Zealand Law Review and Art New Zealand.  Subjects covered include general interest material, social research, current affairs, the arts and humanities

Fundview In Library access only
Fundview is New Zealand’s primary source of information about all forms of funding for voluntary organizations; it contains information about 600+ sources of funding available to community groups. These include local bodies, philanthropic trusts and an assortment of government agencies such as Lottery Grants Board.


Maori Dictionary
The Ngâta English to Mâori dictionary is the most extensive dictionary yet published, offering over 14,500 headwords. Based primarily on the Ngati Porou dialect, the dictionary embraces a wide variety of tribal usages and is accessible to students at a basic level, as well as to those with an advanced knowledge of Mâori language.

New Zealand Building Code Handbook
The New Zealand Building Code Handbook has been revised; the new edition reflects the changes introduced by the Building Act 2004, Building (Specified Systems, Change the Use, and Earthquake-Prone Buildings) Regulations 2005 and amendments to other documents. It contains the following five sections:

  • How the building controls regulatory framework works
  • Building Code clauses
  • Current definitions
  • Lists of all standards referenced in the Compliance Documents
  • A current index for Compliance Documents.
  • Importantly, the revised Building Code Handbook material has been separated into two publications.

The revised ‘compliance schedule’ section from the first Building Code Handbook is now contained in a separate publication called the Compliance Schedule Handbook.

New Zealand Electronic Text Centre
Online archive of New Zealand and Pacific Islands texts and heritage materials.  Offers an ever expanding, fully searchable, set of images and full-text books, manuscripts and journals.

NZ Legislation
Contains New Zealand Acts (laws made by Parliament), Bills (proposed acts), and Regulations (laws made under acts). The site is updated by the Parliamentary Counsel Office, which drafts and publishes most New Zealand legislation

New Zealand Writers
Contains entries on 350+New Zealand writers.  Includes 150 author entries reprinted from the Oxford Companion to New Zealand Literature, (Ed. Roger Robinson and Nelson Wattie).

PapersPast
Contains more than one million pages of digitised New Zealand newspapers and periodicals. The collection covers the years 1839 to 1920 and includes publications from all regions of New Zealand journals.
